My Mother's Premonition

My mom, who is a fallen-away Catholic, has been consulting her astrological chart and is convinced that she's going to die "sometime before Christmas, probably before Thanksgiving."  She says her premonitions are almost always correct.

She just revised her will.  She is writing out detailed instructions for me about what to do with all her possessions, and for one of my brothers about how to take care of her house and garden.  She applied for more life insurance.  She bought a gravesite and started payments for her funeral today.

She says she prayed for a sign that she is really going to die, and that she most definitely received one.

I asked her what she's doing to prepare her soul.  She said she doesn't intend to do any "Catholic prayers", but will start meditating again.

And yet she wants a Catholic funeral Mass and will be buried in a Catholic cemetary.

She says, "won't that be unfortunate?  You just moved so you could be closer to me, and I could help you out more with the kids.  It almost seems unfair."

She's completely matter-of-fact about the whole thing.

I just don't know what to make of all this.

  2. Yikes. You should tell her that YOUR astrological chart assures you that astrological charts are not to be taken seriously, especially around the holidays. I'm so sorry Christine. Will she agree not to mention it in front of the kids?

  4. Ugh. :( My grandmother was like that. She went around with all of us whenever we would visit with a pad of yellow sticky notes. She wrote our names down on things and stuck it to different belongings of her so we would all know who was getting what. It was funny at the time (even she had to giggle at all her unfortunate planning). We quickly realized though that she was just missing my grandfather too much. We think she basically willed herself to pass. We are thankful that she is where she wanted to be but so sad at the circumstances. I hope that your mom is wrong. :/

  5. Not sure if the Catholic Mass or the astrology is more disheartening. I will pray for her and you. Hopefully the Holy Spirit can do some good work with this.

  6. Wow, that's scary. Maybe you could request that your priest say a Mass with her as the intention? I'll pray for her!

These two sermons gave me much hope about a similar situation. The second part is the one that floored me. I suggest doing as this blessed priest did with his own mother and I pray the outcome is the same! How scary for your poor, lost mama. I'll pray!

  8. That is strange. We will will pray for her. I've never consulted atrological charts and I'm certainly not new age, but I do have a "premonition" that someone in my family is going to die every few months or so. So far..they are all still alive. I don't put much stock in promonitions. LOL

Has your mother ever struggled with anxiety or depression or OCD? I think sometimes worries or fears can turn into "premonitions" in certain people's minds if the tend to fixate on one thing. .
